What is a lower eyelid lift?

A lower eyelid lift, also known as lower eyelid blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to improve the appearance under the eyes. Many people, especially as they get older, suffer from sagging skin and the formation of bags under the eyes. These are often perceived as disturbing as they often give a tired or older appearance. This change in facial skin can be caused by various factors, such as genetic predisposition, sun exposure and the natural ageing process.

Typical reasons for a lower eyelid lift are

  • Sagging skin around the eyes
  • Bags under the eyes and wrinkles
  • Unwanted dark circles
  • Desire for a aesthetic improvement of the appearance
  • Increase in the Self-esteem and self-confidence

What methods are there to tighten the lower eyelids?

Lower eyelid lift

There are various methods for lower eyelid lifting, which can be selected according to individual needs, skin type and the desired result.

Here are the most common techniques:

- Conventional lower eyelid tightening: This method involves the removal of excess skin and fat pads through a fine incision under the lash line or along the lower edge of the eyelid. This is the most common form and usually achieves very natural results.
- Transconjunctival blepharoplasty: With this technique, the incision is made inside the lower eyelid so that no visible scars remain on the skin. This method is particularly suitable for younger patients who mainly suffer from bags under the eyes and less from excess skin.
- Laser lower eyelid lift: Instead of a traditional incision, a laser is used to tighten the skin and reduce fat deposits. This can lead to less swelling and faster healing, as the laser is also gentle on the surrounding tissue.
- Combined procedures: A lower eyelid lift can also be combined with other procedures. For example, with an upper eyelid lift or a facelift to achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation result.

A consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon can help you find the best method for your needs and wishes.
Advantages of a lower eyelid lift:
- Rejuvenation of the appearance: Removing bags under the eyes and excess skin makes you look fresher and younger.
- Natural results: Using modern techniques, the lower eyelid lift achieves natural results so that your face not only looks younger, but also fresher.
- Long-term results: The results of a lower eyelid lift can last for many years.
- Minimal scarring: Thanks to precise incision techniques, the scars are often barely visible.
- New self-confidence: Many patients report increased self-esteem and a positive self-perception after the operation, as they feel more comfortable with their new, radiant appearance.

Disadvantages of a lower eyelid lift:
- Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising may occur after the operation and may last for a few days.
- Risk and complications: As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including infection, bleeding or wound healing disorders.
- Healing time: Although recovery is usually rapid, patients should refrain from certain activities during the healing phase.
- Unintended results: Although most people are satisfied with their results, overcorrection can occur in rare cases. As with any operation, there is a risk that the result will not meet expectations.

Advantages of a lower eyelid lift

There can be many reasons for a lower eyelid lift. You may want a lower eyelid lift to improve the appearance of your eye area, whether through a fresher look, better facial definition or possible rejuvenation. The desire for long-lasting results without constant touch-ups or injections is another important reason why many choose this procedure.

The procedure for a lower eyelid lift

  1. Counselling interview: You have the opportunity to express your wishes and concerns in a personal meeting. Together with our expert, you will find the best solution for you.
  2. Intervention: During the procedure, you will be given a local anaesthetic to make you feel comfortable. You can also book a twilight sleep if you wish. The procedure usually takes between one and two hours.
-Local anaesthesia: In this procedure, only the area around the eyes is anaesthetised with a local anaesthetic so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. This allows you to stay awake during the lower eyelid lift.
    - Twilight sleep: In some cases, light sedation may also be offered so that you are not aware of anything during the procedure.
    - Duration: The procedure usually takes between one and two hours.
  3. Aftercare: Responsible aftercare is important. Our clinics offer you comprehensive care so that you can get back on your feet quickly.

When should I have surgery to remove bags under the eyes?

The decision to have surgery for bags under the eyes depends on various factors. Here are some signs and times that may indicate that surgery may be appropriate:
1. bags under the eyes: An accumulation of fatty tissue or loosening of the skin can lead to visible bags under the eyes, which impair the appearance and make the face look older. A tightening procedure can help to reduce these bags under the eyes.
2. age and skin elasticity: As we age, the skin loses elasticity, which can cause the lower eyelids to sag or droop. This can lead to a tired or sad appearance with which you simply no longer feel comfortable.
3. dark circles: Tightening the lower eyelids can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles, which can be caused by thinning skin and translucent blood vessels in the under-eye area.
4. inheritance: In some people, drooping lower eyelids or bags under the eyes are genetic. In these cases, surgery can help to achieve the desired appearance.

How much does a lower eyelid lift cost? What is the price of a lower eyelid lift in Germany?

The cost of a lower eyelid lift in Germany can vary depending on various factors such as the location of the clinic, the surgeon's level of experience and the type of procedure. In general, the prices for such procedures range from around €2,000-4,500. Liplift surgery can be considerably cheaper abroad, partly due to lower wage levels. We offer upper eyelid lifts in Turkey and upper eyelid lifts in the Czech Republic by experienced and qualified doctors from our clinic partners.

Will the costs of a lower eyelid lift be covered by my health insurance?

As this is an aesthetic procedure, the costs are unfortunately not usually covered by health insurance.

How much does a lower eyelid lift cost in Turkey or the Czech Republic?

A lower eyelid lift in Turkey is possible from around €1,500 and is therefore cheaper than in Germany and most other European countries. However, you don't have to compromise on medical care. The doctors at our partner clinics are all experienced and very well trained.

For a lower eyelid lift in the Czech Republic you can expect to pay from €1,500. Here, too, you can save quite a bit compared to many other European countries. However, you don't have to compromise on medical care. The doctors at our partner clinics are all experienced and very well trained. Did you know, for example, that the licensing criteria for plastic surgery in the Czech Republic are extremely strict and surgeons are only allowed to perform cosmetic surgery after 7 years of additional training? In Germany, any surgeon is authorised to do this without further training.

What are the risks of a lower eyelid lift?

As with any surgical procedure, there are also risks associated with an upper eyelid lift. Possible complications include

- Scarring: Even if the incision is well concealed, scars may remain visible, especially if the wound has healed poorly.
- Infections: As with any operation, there is a risk of infection, which can be minimised with the right aftercare.
- Asymmetry: In rare cases, an uneven lifting of the upper eyelids may occur.
- Overcorrection: Too much change can lead to an unnatural result.
- Dryness and irritation of the eyes: Some patients experience dryness or irritation of the eyes after a lower eyelid lift, as the procedure can impair tear production. This can be treated with eye drops, but should usually subside after some time.
- Numbness or nerve damage: Temporary or permanent numbness of the eyelids may occur.
- Swelling and bruising: These are common and usually subside within days to weeks.
- Wound healing disorder: Some patients have slower or less complete healing, which increases the risk of infection or scarring. People with certain pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or poor skin condition may have a higher risk of wound healing problems.

It is important to be fully informed about the risks in advance and to choose an experienced surgeon. We will be happy to help you choose the right clinic that we have tested. A certificate of fitness for surgery from your GP before the lower eyelid lift can help to identify and minimise potential health risks by ensuring that the patient is in good physical condition for the procedure. Nevertheless, we recommend that you take out aftercare insurance just in case.

What about aftercare and the healing process after a lower eyelid lift?

Aftercare and the healing process following a lower eyelid lift are crucial for achieving optimal results and minimising complications.

Here is an overview of the typical process:

Immediately after the operation:

- Pain and discomfort: Most patients experience mild to moderate pain in the first few hours after the procedure, which can usually be well controlled with painkillers.
- Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal after the operation. This often peaks in the first 48 hours and then slowly subsides. Cooling (e.g. with cold compresses) can help to reduce the swelling.
- Association: A light bandage can be applied for the first few days to protect the wounds and reduce swelling.

In the first few days (1-7 days):

- Swelling and bruising: These should start to improve significantly after about 3-5 days, but it can take up to two weeks for most of the visible swelling and bruising to subside.
- Threads: As a rule, the stitches are removed after 5-7 days if they are not self-dissolving. This is not necessary for self-dissolving sutures.
- Eye care: The eyes may be dry or irritated at first. Eye drops or ointments can help to alleviate the symptoms.

In the first two weeks:

- Avoidance of strenuous activities: In the first two weeks after the operation, physical exertion, sport and activities that lead to heavy sweating or increased blood flow should be avoided. This helps to prevent blood clots and unnecessary swelling.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Direct sunlight should be avoided to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring. Sunglasses can help to protect the eyes from UV rays.

From the third week:

- Lighter activities: After about two weeks, most patients can resume lighter activities, but intensive sport or strenuous physical work should still be avoided.
- Continue to be careful with your eyes: Eyes should continue to be protected from sunlight and eye care should be continued to avoid dryness or irritation.

Long-term healing process (1-6 months):

- Final result: The final result of the lower eyelid lift will be visible after about 3 to 6 months, when all swelling has subsided and the scars have healed. During this time, the skin will continue to heal and adapt to its new shape.
- Scar care: Whilst the scars are usually well hidden and not very visible after healing, there may be some redness or slight bumps in the first few months after the operation. It may be recommended to treat scars with special creams or oils to promote healing and improve the appearance of scars.

Important aftercare tips:

- Regular check-ups: After the operation, regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are important in the first few weeks to monitor the healing process and ensure that no complications occur.
- No friction or traction on the eyelids: It is important not to make any sudden movements or rubbing in the eyelid area in the first few weeks after the procedure to aid healing.

As the healing process is individualised, the doctor treating you in the clinic will give you precise tips on aftercare and what you should pay attention to during the healing process. Following the doctor's instructions carefully is crucial for the result and optimal healing.

Is a lower eyelid lift right for you?

If you are considering a lower eyelid lift, it is important to be well informed.

Think about the following aspects:

  • Your own gut feeling: Think about what you want and how you want to feel after the procedure.
  • Health: Discuss possible health risks with a medical specialist.
  • Long-term decision: A lower eyelid lift is a permanent decision. Make sure you are ready for this step.
