Gynaecomastia treatment

What is an arm lift?

An arm lift (brachioplasty) is an aesthetic procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the upper arms. The aim is to create a firmer, more defined contour. Particularly after significant weight loss, pregnancy or skin ageing, the skin can lose elasticity and the arms can appear saggy. Modern techniques such as the classic or mini arm lift, often combined with liposuction, can improve the appearance. The procedure takes about 1-3 hours, usually under general anaesthetic, and requires 1-2 weeks recovery time. It is suitable for men and women with a stable body weight and good health who want a more harmonious body image. In certified clinics, e.g. in the Czech Republic or Turkey, experienced specialists and German-speaking carers will guide you safely through the process and the symptoms are easy to recognise. Men with gynaecomastia often notice that their breasts appear larger than usual, which can lead to physical dissatisfaction and a loss of self-confidence. For many sufferers, this is not just an aesthetic problem, but can also lead to emotional and psychological challenges.
It is important to differentiate between gynaecomastia and other breast changes. For example, breast fat deposits, which often occur with obesity or severe weight loss, can be mistaken for gynaecomastia. A comprehensive medical examination is therefore advisable in order to determine the exact cause and initiate appropriate measures.
Whether you're at an uncertain stage in your life or simply want to learn more about gynaecomastia, it's crucial that you educate yourself and seek support. In the right environment, with the appropriate expertise and a trusting relationship with your clinic, you can take the necessary steps to improve your situation and lead a more confident, fulfilling life.

Typical reasons for an arm lift are

  • - Skin irritations
  • Restrictions in everyday life and sport
  • Body image and shame
  • Desire for a aesthetic improvement
  • Increase in the Self-esteem and self-confidence

What methods are available for an arm lift?

Arm lift: Your way to more self-confidence?

Would you like to tighten your upper arms and feel more comfortable? An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes excess skin and fat to create a defined contour. If there is a lot of excess skin, e.g. after weight loss, a classic arm lift with an incision from the elbow to the armpit is used. A mini arm lift with a smaller incision in the armpit region, which leaves only small scars, is suitable for less sagging skin. Liposuction is often combined to remove fat before the skin is tightened - ideal for moderate excess skin. In certified clinics in the Czech Republic and Turkey, experienced specialists use modern techniques, supported by German-speaking carers for your safety.

Arm lift methods
1. classic arm lift
- Description: This method is used for severe excess skin on the upper arms, e.g. after massive weight loss or significant skin ageing. The surgeon makes a longer incision on the inside or back of the upper arm, typically from the elbow to the armpit, to remove excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue. The remaining skin is tightened and sutured to create a smooth, defined arm contour.
- Target: Maximum tightening for patients with pronounced skin laxity to improve the appearance of the arms.
- Advantages: Comprehensive correction, even with large excess skin; long-lasting improvement of the arm contour.
- Special features: The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes 1-3 hours. The recovery time is around 1-2 weeks for light activities and 4-6 weeks for full exercise. In clinics in the Czech Republic and Turkey, the method is performed by experienced specialists and you will be accompanied by a German-speaking counsellor.

2. mini arm lift
- Description: This method is suitable for patients with less excess skin, e.g. slight sagging due to ageing or moderate weight loss. The incision is smaller and usually only made in the armpit region, making the scars less noticeable. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened.
- Target: Subtle tightening for patients with medium excess skin.
- Advantages: Shorter scars, faster recovery time (approx. 1 week for light activities), less time-consuming than the classic method.
- Special features: Usually performed under general anaesthetic, takes about 1-2 hours. Ideal for patients with moderate needs who are looking for a suitable solution in clinics in the Czech Republic or Turkey.

3. combination with liposuction
- Description: This method combines an arm lift with liposuction to treat both excess fat and sagging skin. Firstly, fatty tissue is removed using small cannulas before excess skin is tightened. The incision is often shorter than with a classic arm lift, as the liposuction has already improved the contour.
- Target: Harmonious arm contour for patients with fat deposits and moderate excess skin.
- Advantages: Combines fat reduction and skin tightening in one procedure; often minor scars.
- Special features: The procedure takes 1-3 hours, usually under general anaesthetic. The recovery time is 1-2 weeks. German-speaking counsellors in the clinics support patients during the process.

4. extended arm lift
- Description: This method is intended for patients with very severe excess skin that extends beyond the upper arms, e.g. to the lateral chest wall, often after extreme weight loss. The incision is made along the upper arm and can extend to the chest for a full lift. Excess skin and fat are removed to create a uniform appearance.
- Target: Comprehensive correction for patients with pronounced excess skin in several areas.
- Advantages: Provides a holistic firming effect that harmonises the arms and adjacent areas.
- Special features: Longer operation time (2-4 hours) and healing time (2-3 weeks for light activities). The method requires careful aftercare, which is provided in certified clinics in the Czech Republic/Turkey.

5. laser or ultrasound-assisted arm lift
- Description: This modern, less invasive method uses laser or ultrasound technology to tighten the skin and reduce fatty tissue, often with minimal incisions. It is suitable for patients with mild to moderate excess skin and is offered in specialised clinics (e.g. in the Czech Republic/Turkey). The technology promotes collagen production to support skin tightening.
- Target: Subtle tightening with minimal scarring for patients with minimal skin laxity.
- Advantages: Shorter recovery time (approx. 5-10 days), suitable for premature skin ageing.
- Special features: Duration approx. 1-2 hours, German-speaking support facilitates communication in the clinics.

Advantages of an arm lift:
  1. Improved appearance of the upper arms: An arm lift removes excess skin and fat to create a firmer, more defined contour, giving the arms a more harmonious appearance.
  2. Increase in self-confidence: Many patients feel more comfortable in sleeveless clothing or during sports after the procedure.
  3. Freedom in clothing and sport: Tight-fitting clothing and sporting activities are possible again without feeling uncomfortable.
  4. Lasting results: If the weight remains stable, the results of the operation are usually permanent.
  5. Reduction of mental stress: Anxiety, shame or social withdrawal tendencies often decrease significantly after treatment.
  6. Rapid physical recovery: You should wear compression garments for approx. 2-6 weeks and may return to sport after approx. 6 weeks (starting slowly)

Disadvantages of an arm lift:
  1. Scarring: The procedure leaves scars, usually on the inside of the upper arms, which may fade but remain visible.
  2. Recovery time: After the operation, 1-2 weeks are required for light activities and 4-6 weeks for sport, which can mean restrictions in everyday life.
  3. Possible risks: As with any procedure, complications such as infection, swelling or numbness can occur and require aftercare.
  4. Costs: Treatment, even in clinics in the Czech Republic or Turkey, is associated with financial expenses that should be checked individually.
  5. No guarantee for perfect results: The result depends on individual factors such as the condition of the skin or the healing process.

The arm lift procedure

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) follows a clearly structured procedure that ensures medical safety and the most comfortable healing process possible. The aim is to achieve a firmer, more defined arm contour and a recovery with as few complications as possible.

1. preparation and surgical release: Before the procedure, the clinic recommends obtaining a surgical clearance from your GP. This general medical examination ensures that there are no acute illnesses or infections (e.g. flu-like infections, Covid-19, other infectious diseases) and that the operation poses no health risks.

2. preliminary examination in the clinic (1 day before the operation): A thorough preliminary examination takes place at the clinic the day before the operation. The specialist performs a physical examination, discusses the arm lift procedure in detail and explains the possible risks and rules of behaviour. In addition, medical checks (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, blood values) are carried out to ensure patient safety.

3rd day of surgery: The arm lift is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes 1-3 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Depending on the amount of excess skin and fat, the following techniques are used: - Liposuction: suction of excess fatty tissue via small incisions with fine cannulas. - Skin removal: Removal of excess skin via an incision on the inside or back of the upper arm. - Combination of both methods: Most common variant for mixed forms of excess fat and skin. - Mini arm lift: For minor excess skin with a smaller incision in the armpit region. After the operation, a compression bandage is applied to support healing, reduce swelling and mould the skin to the new arm contour.

4th stay in the clinic: After the procedure, the patient remains hospitalised for approximately one night in order to undergo the initial recovery phase under medical supervision. The circulation is monitored and attention is paid to possible complications. Pain is usually easy to control and subsides in the first few days.

5. recommended stay close to the hotel (3-4 days): After discharge, it is recommended that you spend 3-4 days in a nearby hotel. This time allows the body to rest and enables a follow-up examination at the clinic before travelling home. The doctor checks the healing process, assesses the results and adjusts compression or wound care if necessary.

How much does an arm lift cost? What is the price of an arm lift in Germany?

The cost of an arm lift (brachioplasty) in Germany varies depending on the clinic and type of procedure. As a rule, the prices for the operation are between 4,000 and 7,500 euros. These vary depending on the extent of the procedure, whether only excess skin is removed or whether liposuction is also performed. Other factors such as hospital stay, anaesthetic costs and aftercare can influence the total price. It is advisable to obtain cost estimates from several clinics in advance in order to make an informed decision.

Will the cost of an arm lift be covered by my health insurance?

Whether the costs of an arm lift are covered by health insurance depends on whether the procedure is medically necessary. In Germany, purely aesthetic arm lifts are generally not covered. However, if there are medical reasons, such as chronic skin inflammation caused by excess skin or severe psychological distress following weight loss, the costs may be covered. A medical certificate and an application to the health insurance company are required. Contact us for more information!

What are the risks of an arm lift?

An arm lift (brachioplasty) can increase your self-confidence and well-being, but like any surgical procedure, it harbours potential risks. Here are the most important risks you should be aware of in order to make an informed decision.

1. scarring: Incisions on the inside or back of the upper arms leave scars that fade but remain visible.
2. swelling and bruising: Temporary swelling or bruising is common and usually subsides within a few weeks.
3. numbness: Temporary sensory disturbances in the treated areas may occur, but often disappear on their own.
4. infections: Rare, but possible; careful wound care and aftercare minimise this risk.
5. wound healing disorders: Delayed healing or wound dehiscence may occur in individual cases and require medical supervision.
6. restrictions in everyday life: The recovery period of 1-2 weeks for light activities and 4-6 weeks for sports can affect everyday life.
7. thrombosis and pulmonary embolism: In very rare cases, thrombosis (blood clots) and associated serious complications such as pulmonary embolism may occur, especially if the patient is immobilised for a prolonged period.

In the certified clinics in the Czech Republic and Turkey, experienced specialists and German-speaking caregivers minimise these risks by providing professional care.
